Paper Title: Efficient removal of fluoride in water using Activated Biochar from food waste:Thermodynamic and Kinetic study

Abstract: Thermally treated domestic food waste is utilized to prepare bio-char, followed by chemical activation to obtain activated bio-char (Biochar-act) which is used as de-fluoridating agent in contaminated water. The structural property of the synthesized activated bio-char is studied in detail. From continuous batch process , it is shown that efficiency of bio-char with lower degree of carbonization has remarkable properties of de-fluoridation. Here temperature, contact time and adsorbent dose , used as process parameters, have strong influence on fluoride uptake process. The adsorption equilibrium data are well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model. Comparatively the data provided by pseudo-second-order kinetic model correlated better experimentally than pseudo-first-order kinetic model. From thermodynamic point of view, it is experimentally proved that de-fluoridation onto activated bio-char is spontaneous and endothermic in nature. Here, a low-cost process is suggested using low-cost starting materials to convert bio-char upon heat treatment at 350˚C and then activated chemically by acid. The prepared adsorbent has higher de-fluoridation efficiency such as 91.24%.So it may be concluded that activated bio-char is economically and environmentally safe for de-fluoridation in waste water.

Paper Title: Characterization of scratching behaviour of surface layers produced on X42Cr13 plastic mould tool steel by Duplex Heat Treatment

Abstract: Advances in surface techniques during the 20th century have enabled to develop a wide range of technological processes. Plasma nitriding is a surface modifying process developed to increase the wear and corrosion resistance, furthermore fatigue strength of ferrous alloy steels. The advantage of the plasma nitriding is that it is a well-controlled process offering no porosity of surface layers, better performance and layer structure.PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) is a deposition of material in the vapour phase onto a solid substrate in vacuum. PVD coating applied onto the specimen is one of the most effective and flexible solutions for tribological problems.

The presented research work involves characterization of a duplex treated i.e. plasma nitrided (at two different temperatures) and PVD coated – X42Cr13/W cold working tool steel with special emphasis on the layer adhesion. To analyse the adhesion between the coating and the substrate material scratch tests were performed and evaluated.

Paper Title: Critical appraisal of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Indian Architects, Engineers, Contractors (AEC) industry

Abstract: The Indian Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry has still not been completely successful in the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Majorly because many of the members are still not aware that BIM can be used for improving the design, construction, and facility management of projects, moreover a higher LOD (level of detail) can be attained. Owing to this, several matters about management ascend during the design. This fact builds the need to standardize and craft guidelines for the implementation of a BIM process in the construction industry, additionally the process needs to be revised, reviewed and the functionality must be rechecked as per the Indian construction scenario. There is a need for a guidance-centered BIM implementation process in India, viewing all buildings as a product of the constantly evolving process. With the help of this research the Indian AEC industry will get ahead of its existing state of infancy in adoption of BIM.

Paper Title: An efficient general family of Estimators for population mean when Non-Response occurs in the study variable

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of estimating population mean in the presence of non-response for the study variable y utilizing a few known population parameters of the auxiliary variable x under simple random sampling with sub-sample of non-response. We have proposed a new estimator for estimating population mean and based on the new estimator we suggested an improved general family of estimators to estimate the population mean in the presence of non-response of study variable y, when the population mean of auxiliary variable x is known. The asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators such as bias, mean square error (MSE), and minimum mean square error have been obtained. In addition this study supports the presupposition with numerical results showing the performance of the proposed estimators as clearly more efficient than the other relevant estimators.

Paper Title: Production and characterization of bio catalytic enzyme produced from fermentation of fruit and vegetable wastes and its influence on aquaculture sludge solubilisation

Abstract: The aquaculture wastewater discharge from shrimp aquaculture industry may resulted in high organic content and nutrients that may considered as a source of surface and ground pollution. Hence, before disposing the wastewater, it has to be treated efficiently to reduce its pollutants concentration. Anaerobic digestion is one of common method used for wastewater treatment but it has limitation in terms of long retention times and low overall degradation efficiency of the organic matter. Therefore, a pretreatment is usually applied before further treatment. This study focused on the production of bio catalytic enzyme from fermentation of fruit and vegetable wastes such as pineapple, mango, orange and tomato dregs to increase aquaculture wastewater solubility. The fermentation of the wastes were produced by three months fermentation of the mixture of molasses, waste and water with the ratio of 1: 3: 10. Characterization of the enzyme showed that the enzyme possessed lipase, amylase and protease activity. All type of fruit and vegetable wastes were performed at different pH and treatment time for 120 hours and the increase in reduction of total suspended solid (TSS) and volatile suspended solid (VSS) were observed when sludge treated with all type of enzyme solution. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) solubility were determined to identify the sludge solubilisation. The COD and TAN solubilisation were highest found to be 88% and 64% respectively for Orange Garbage Enzyme (OGE) at condition of pH 7.0 in treated sludge compare with other type of enzyme. Consequently, the finding from this study showed that the enzyme produced from different type of fruits and vegetables wastes has potential to improve the aquaculture sludge solubility from insolubilize to solubilize substances for further anaerobic digestion system efficiency.

Paper Title: Phytochemical screening of fermented and unfermented wheat and corn straw extracts as potential biocontrol agents

Abstract: In pest management, the tendency towards application of natural products, such as plant extracts, as safer alternative for synthetic pesticides, is increasing. The objective of this study was to investigate usability of agro-industrial by-products, as rich sources of natural bioactive compounds, for weeds and plant pathogen control.

Total phenolic (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) content of methanol extracts of wheat (WS) and corn straws (CS) were determined using spectrophotometric methods, and individual phenolic and flavonoid compounds were identified using HPLC method. Antioxidant activities were evaluated by DPPH and FRAP assays. In vitro antagonistic activity assays were performed against Monilinia fructicola isolate NPGM and Colletotrichum acutatum isolate Coll using wells technique in Petri plates. Germination bioassay was conducted to evaluate the biological activity of extracts on germination percentage (GP) and seedlings length (SL) of Abutilon theophrasti seed. Further, WS and CS were modified by fermentation-based pre-treatment with sulphuric acid in order to convert straw into a fermentable substrate, and finally fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum. Changes in TPC and TFC, antioxidant and biological activity for extracts of those samples were investigated.

Paper Title: Corporate Governance and Performance of Firms: An Empirical Evidence from the Banking Sector of Ghana

Abstract: The study investigates the relationship between Corporate Governance and the Performance of Banks in Ghana using their financial performance. Primary and Secondary data were collected through the administration of structured questionnaires and from the Ghana Association of Bankers respectively. In analyzing the data, Panel Data Methodology was used. The findings show that large board size, long serving CEOs, size of audit committee, audit committee independence, foreign ownership, institutional ownership, annual general meeting and dividend policy are positively related and associated with the financial performance of banks in Ghana. The banks are encouraged to adopt good corporate governance practices to improve on their financial performance and also protect the shareholders. Most importantly, the regulatory authorities must ensure compliance with good corporate governance and apply the appropriate sanctions for non-compliance to help the growth and development of the banking sector.

The main contribution of the study to knowledge lies in its effort in strengthening corporate governance beyond the rights and responsibilities of different stakeholders in the management of a firm into areas involving the relationship between finance providers and a firm, compliance with legal, ethical and environmental needs of the society among others. This contribution has in no small way helped in enhancing my understanding about the interpretations which have shaped the corporate governance in relation with performance of the firm both in theory and practice.

Paper Title: Experimental studies on microbial populations diversity in continuous flow aerobic granular sludge systems

Abstract: Recent trends in wastewater treatment research have focused, under the urge of improving wastewater treatment performances and cost-efficiency, on adapting the aerobic granular sludge technology to continuous flow operation regime.

In our study, we followed both the evolution of wastewater treatment performance in lab scale continuous flow bioreactors (in different configurations) and the comparative evolution of the microbial populations of the aerobic granular sludge. The aerobic sludge granules were continuously monitored during reactor start-up, granules formation and steady state conditions, in terms of microbial diversity and morphology by DNA fingerprinting using qPCR amplification and respectively, confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The experimental study focused on nutrient removal performances evaluation and the qualitative and quantitative assessment of specific species or functional genes with increased influence on the performance of biological processes involved in wastewater treatment, namely nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal.

Paper Title: Effect of Using AZ31B Trimmings As Filler Rod In Gas Tungsten Arc Welding Of AZ31B Alloy

Abstract: AZ31B is one of the most widely used magnesium alloy in engineering applications. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is one of the most economical method for joining AZ31B alloy. In this experimental study, 4 mm thick AZ31B alloy plates were square butt-welded using GTAW. The prime objective of this study was to study the effect of AZ31B trimmings as filler rod on the microstructure and properties of the GTAW welded AZ31B plates. The trimmings for the filler rod were prepared from the 4 mm thick AZ31b plates through electric discharge machine. The effects of the GTAW process on the weld bead, macrostructure, microstructure, micro hardness and tensile strength were investigated. The GTAW yielded good quality welded joint showing a broad Heat Affected Zone having a uniform distribution of inter-metallics caused by the heat input during welding. The results showed that increasing welding current led to deterioration of the surface appearance of the weld. When the AZ31B plate was welded with GTAW at a weld current of 86 amp (ac) a fine weld was obtained with good tensile strength. The results obtained shows the feasibility of successfully using AZ31B trimmings as filler rod in the event of the non-availability of any commercial filler rod.

Paper Title: An Assessment of Environmental Noise Pollution of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India

Abstract: Jodhpur, situated on the edge of the Thar Desert at an altitude of 216 meters above mean sea level is the second largest city of Rajasthan, India. In recent years Jodhpur have expanded exponentially with increase in population, industries, vehicles etc. and this growth has created the problems like noise, air and waste pollution to name a few. Noise pollution is one of the problems which are not being addressed seriously and hence the present study was undertaken. The noise levels Leq dB (A) were monitored at three sites namely Shastri Nagar (Lachoo memorial College of Science and Technology-LMC), Basni Phase I, and AIIMS main gate road site, grouped as Residential, Industrial and silence zone area respectively. The monthly observations were recorded during morning hour (8-10AM), noon hours ( 12-2PM), and evening hour (5-7 PM ) using sound level meter (Envirotech Instruments) model SLM 100, taking the readings at an interval of 1min, from December 2017 to April 2018. L10, L90 and noise climate (NC) were also calculated to assess the gravity of noise environment. The maximum noise level recorded at Shastri Nagar,(LMC) site was 87.0dB in January 2018 (8-10 AM), at Basni Phase I site was 97.2dB in December 2017 (8-10 AM), and was recorded 91.6dB in April 2018 (5-7 PM) at AIIMS main gate road site. The average noise level were found to be more than prescribed limits set by Central Pollution control Board (CPCB 2000) at all the three sites for all the five months and all the three recording hours (8-10AM, 12-2PM, and 5-7 PM), except at Basni Phase I site when it was observed to be slightly below (CPCB limit 75 dB - observed level 73.67 dB) the prescribed limits, in February 2018 (12-2 PM). The present study can be fruitful in devising effective methods to curb this problem.

Paper Title: Choline Chloride based Electrolyte for Zinc-Air batteries

Abstract: Zinc-air batteries are widely used and interesting because they have a high energy density. Also, zinc metal is inexpensive and abundant. Recently, neutral chloride electrolytes receive enormous attention as these neutral electrolytes do not suffer carbon dioxide poisoning. Nevertheless, the metal-air battery systems in neutral electrolyte chloride based have undesired side reaction leading to chlorine evolution during cell charging. Therefore, thiourea have been applied to suppress chlorine evolution. In this work, chloride-based electrolyte that made from choline chloride (ChCl) and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) is investigated. The activities of zinc deposition and stripping are examined as functions of ChCl, ZnCl2, and thiourea using cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that the electrolyte containing 2.5M ChCl, 0.6M ZnCl2, and 1000PPM thiourea exhibited highest zinc dissolution with small chlorine evolution.
