Paper Title: Enjoyment of Physical Activity and Quality of Life among Institutionalized Older Adults/: A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract:

Background: Physical activity (PA) was found to be insufficient among older adults in Malaysia. To increase their PA intention, enjoyment of PA and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) should be promoted since they were reported to be correlates and predictors of PA in various studies. In this study, these factors were investigated to determine their correlations with PA among institutionalized older adults.

Objective: The aim was to investigate the correlation of enjoyment of PA and HRQoL respectively with level of PA among institutionalized older adults.

Method: One hundred and thirty-four participants aged 60 years old and above from 24 older adults home cares in Klang Valley were recruited. Level of PA was measured using Physical Activity Scale for the Elderlies (PASE); enjoyment of physical activity was measured using 8-item Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES-8) whereas quality of life was measured using 5 Level- 5 Dimensional- EuroQoL questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L).

Results: Prevalence of physical inactivity among institutionalized older adults is 59% and 53% of the participants enjoyed PA. Positive correlation was found between level of PA with enjoyment of PA (rs = .355, p < .001). Values in the dimensions of HRQoL were higher in the physically active participants thus these two variables showed a positive correlation. Significant moderate correlation was recorded between PA level with mobility domain (rs = -.423, p < .01) and usual activity (rs = -.389, p < .01) while weak correlation between PA level with self-care (rs = -.273, p < .01), and EQ VAS (rs = .229, p < .01). No significant correlation was found between PA level with pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression domains.

Conclusion: Older adults living in institutions did not meet the recommended level of PA and majority enjoyed PA. Enjoyment of PA and HRQoL had moderate correlation with level of PA. More in-depth studies are suggested to investigate other correlates of PA among this population.

Paper Title: Inoculation Enhances Soybean Physiology and Yield Under Moderate Drought

Abstract: With a high seed content of protein and oil, soybean is one of the most widely-grown legumes worldwide. Inoculation process enables soybean to achieve most, and sometimes all, of his nitrogen requirements through N2-fixation process, however, this process, like soybean plant itself, is drought-sensitive. Drought is globally-increasingly imposed as a result of climatic changes, negatively affecting soybean production.

An experiment was conducted in Debrecen, Hungary in 2017 and 2018 to evaluate the influence of moderate drought stress on some physiological parameters of both inoculated and non-inoculated soybean plants. Results showed that drought negatively affected soybean's physiology and yield, regardless of inoculation; however, inoculated plants could maintain better values of studied parameters relative to their non-inoculated counterparts. On the other hand, drought occurring during R4 stage had more noticeable effects on soybean plants as compared to drought occurring earlier (at V2 stage) during vegetative period.

It was concluded that inoculation could be a beneficial strategy in order for soybean to reveal better physiology and, consequently, better yield under moderate drought conditions, and that the timing of drought stress occurrence is crucial regarding soybean's vigor and final seed yield.

Paper Title: Chitosan Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Systems for the treatment of Cancer and Glaucoma

Abstract: Novel polymeric nanoparticles based on chitosan were developed for oral administration for Doxirubicin. These nanoparticles were developed utilizing the double emulsion solvent evaporation technique for sustained delivery. The particles enhanced cellular accumulation of encapsulated drugs, compared to the free drugs, in vitro in MCF-7 and Caco-II tumor cell lines and enhanced oral bioavailability of doxorubicin in rats. Other polymeric nanoparticles based on acrylate polymer were prepared and loaded with medications for glaucoma management. The effects of these nanoparticles on reducing the intra ocular pressure (IOP) of rabbit's eyes were investigated and compared to the effects of conventional drug solutions. These novel formulas give a significant decrease in IOP for longer periods.

Paper Title: The Effect of one year yoga therapy on Pulmonary Function Test and Perceived Stress in Postmenopausal

Women

Abstract:

Introduction: Postmenopausal phase is characterized by a continuous decline in ovarian function due to which women are vulnerable to stress and health complications including the efficiency of respiratory muscles. Currently these symptoms are managed by hormone replacement therapy. However, hormonal therapy can cause complications which has resulted in search for various alternative therapies to improve the quality of life. Yoga is one such alternative therapy. There are very few scientific studies regarding the effect of yoga on stress and respiratory parameters. In the present study we investigated the effect of one year yoga therapy on pulmonary function tests and perceived stress in postmenopausal women.

Materials and Methods: The present study was done only after obtaining the consent from the Institutional ethical Committee. Informed consent was obtained from all the participants. Newly recruited postmenopausal women (48-60 years) having the high stress level (PSS score > 25) were taken for this study. Vital capacity (VC), FVC, FEV1, FEV1 ratio, PEFR, FEF 50, were measured with the help of computerized Vitalograph (Pneumotrac). After one year of yoga therapy perceived stress scale and the respiratory parameters were again analyzed. The parameters obtained were grouped into before one year yoga therapy (Group I) and after one year yoga therapy (Group II)

Results: Yoga therapy for one year showed the significant P< (0.0001) improvement in the stress reduction and the respiratory parameters compared to the control group.

Conclusion: This study clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of one year yoga therapy in decreasing stress and improvement in respiratory parameters .Yoga is easy, safe, non-expensive alternative therapy helping the postmenopausal women and this could be encouraged in the regular management in improving the overall quality of life.

Key words: Yoga, Pulmonary function tests, PSS score, stress.

Paper Title: Identification of Novel Dysregulated Genes in Ovarian Cancer Using NGS Data Analysis

Abstract: Ovarian Cancer ranks as the seventh most common cause of death, globally, and has emerged as one of most common malignancies affecting women. Research and knowledge at the transcriptional level is required for the betterment of its evolving therapy. Our study is based on the Next Generation Sequencing, which, over the last decade, has emerged as the most powerful tool of sequencing strategies. It has been identified that ETS1 is the most up-regulated member in the ETS family of Transcription Factors in the metastasis of OC cells and an increased expression of ETS1 has been observed in OC tumours. In this study, we carried out the ChIP Seq Data Analysis for two such OC cell lines (OVCAR8 and HEYA8) that contains transcriptional targets of ETS1. The identification of differential peaks on these cell lines were conducted based on fold change and the peak annotation was carried out. BioGRID laid the platform for protein-protein interaction network analysis, and construction, by Cytoscape. Then, from the constructed network, highly connected genes were screened. Finally, a few key genes had been identified, which is related to Ovarian Cancer. Many of these genes are present in the intergenic chromosomal regions and have differential peaks. These genes may help in the better understanding of the ovarian cancer and may serve as pioneer for future research. Effective therapies are yet to be developed for ovarian cancer and for that, future research needs to be conducted in order to define the roles of these genes in details.
